City Warns Residents About "Misleading" Energy Solicitations

May 27,2015

The City of Evanston, IL, which operates an opt-out municipal aggregation, has warned residents about "potentially misleading" alternative electricity supplier mail solicitations, "after receiving numerous inquiries from community members."

In a news release, the city curiously states, "Residents report receiving mail solicitations from power suppliers offering the opportunity to switch to renewable energy. However, the City’s Community Choice Electricity Aggregation program already provides participating residents and small businesses with 100 percent renewable energy through its contract with Homefield Energy."

The City's news release does not expound on why these mailers are considered misleading, so we are left to conclude that the City is taking the position that since customers in the aggregation are already being served on 100% renewal energy, if customers selected an alternative provider of 100% renewable energy, no "switch" to renewable energy would occur, only the provider would be switched.

The City also said, "If residents are satisfied with the [aggregation] program, there is no need to take any action."
