Enquirer Fact Check Labels Claims Linking Opposition To Ohio Nuclear Subsidies To China As "Weak"

August 28,2019

The Cincinnati Enquirer published a "fact check" of ads run by opponents of nuclear subsidies in Ohio, in which such ads allege opposition to the subsidies is, "boosting Chinese financial interests."

The claim is made due to certain merchant generation receiving financing from a Chinese government-owned bank. However, the Enquirer notes that, "lending money doesn't equal control," and that numerous international banks are among a package of financers

The Enquirer concluded, "the ad's connection between China and an effort to overturn a recently passed $150 million per year nuclear subsidy is weak."

Gene Pierce, a spokesperson for Ohioans Against Corporate Bailouts, called the ads' claims, "ridiculous", and a, "desperate smokescreen," in a statement to KPVI
