Texas City (Within Oncor) To Impose New Sales Tax On Residential Retail Electric Service

November 22,2016

The City of Commerce, Texas has moved to impose a new sales tax on retail electric service, including on residential customers, The Commerce Journal reports

The City of Commerce is located within the Oncor service area.

Texas law generally prohibits a sales tax on residential electric service, but certain cities, through grandfathering, retained the right to levy such a tax. Commerce is one of such grandfathered cities, though it hasn't previously imposed the tax

The Commerce Journal reports that the new residential electric sales tax would be 1.5%. The ordinance has passed a first reading.
