Bloomberg reports that Exelon has agreed to purchase Pepco Holdings Inc. for $5.4 billion.
The transaction would represent a further turn away from competitive markets for investment at Exelon.
Pepco Holdings owns regulated distribution utilities Pepco, Delmarva Power, and Atlantic City Electric, which collectively serve 2 million customers in Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.
Pepco Holdings had previously sold off its competitive generation, and the wind down of its competitive retail electricity supply business is nearly complete, if not already complete (earlier this month, Pepco Energy Services informed several state regulators that it had reached the end of the term of its legacy retail contracts in such states).
Pepco Energy Services is still engaged in various energy contracting, energy efficiency, and energy project services, which would complement the existing non-commodity offerings in this space offered by Exelon's Constellation unit.
