New Mexico Editorial Seeks "Better Way" To Set Electric Rates, Cites Texas' Competitive Model

November 30,2015

A contentious New Mexico rate case concerning El Paso Electric prompted the Las Cruces Sun-News to wonder if there is a "better way" to set electric rates, casting its eyes east to Texas where the competition sets rates

While not advocating for any specific regulatory model, the Sun-News states that while monopoly regulation may have made sense in different times, "We’re not sure that it still does."

"There has to be a better way," the Sun-News said

The irony is that, in Texas, while most of the state has electric choice, El Paso Electric rates are set in essentially the same manner as in New Mexico, through monopoly regulation, though there is a contingent of customers frustrated with their lack of choice
