Statesman: Industrials Play "Hardball" on Austin Energy Rates, Slam "Monopoly"

Samsung Austin Semiconductor and Freescale Semiconductor are playing "hardball" with Austin Energy regarding rates, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

The two large users reportedly rejected an offer for discounted rates that included the proviso that they enter a long-term agreement, calling the rates "uncompetitive."

"We are astounded that the city would abuse its energy monopoly in the region without any meaningful attempt to honor their own energy affordability commitments," the industrials said in a statement provided to the Austin American-Statesman.

As previously reported by RetailEnergyX.com, this legislative session, a bill was favorably reported out of a Senate committee that would have provided choice to a select group of large users at Austin Energy under certain conditions, though the bill ultimately did not pass (click here for details)
