Chron: Texas Summer Could Provide Glimpse In Electric Market's Future (More Price Responsive Demand)

April 26,2019

Chris Tomlinson in the Houston Chronicle reports that this summer in ERCOT potentially provides an opportunity, if prices spike, to prove-out innovation in the electric industry, via price responsive demand and similar customer strategies

"When alerted to spiking prices, consumers could turn up the thermostat, businesses could scale back during peak hours and companies might voluntarily switch to back-up generators. Some will even sell extra electricity to ERCOT to shore up the grid and make money," Tomlinson notes, citing various previously reported growth of customer-sited generation in ERCOT

Tomlinson's story includes perspectives from Cheryl Mele, ERCOT’s chief operating officer, and Mike Smith, senior vice president for distributed energy for Constellation
