MISO Latest to Allow Generators to Recover Costs Over $1,000 Price Cap

December 22,2014

The Midcontinent ISO has sought FERC approval to allow the ISO to compensate generators in excess of the current $1,000/MWh price cap, if the generator's fuel costs exceed the cap this winter.

Specifically, MISO sought a waiver, "to allow MISO Market Participants to offer and recover costs in excess of MISO’s established $1,000/MWh Energy Offer Price Cap in the event their fuel costs rise to high levels as a result of extreme weather conditions like those experienced during the polar vortex of January and March of 2014."

Costs above the price cap, if approved by MISO, will be compensated via make-whole payment, and the LMP will not exceed $1,000.
