U.K. Court Rules Ofgem Erred In Changing How Retail Energy Price Cap Set

November 13,2019

A U.K. court has granted an appeal brought by Centrica and found that regulator Ofgem inappropriately changed how the retail energy price cap was set, for the first period of the energy default tariff cap

Ofgem had originally proposed setting the initial cap based on wholesale prices from April to September 2018, but later switched the cap to be based on the period February to July 2018.

Centrica had reported a negative £70m impact from the initial price cap

Ofgem noted that the judgment does not change the fundamentals of the price cap, which remains in place
