Op-Ed in San Francisco Chronicle Calls for Expanding Electric Choice

June 10,2014

An op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle co-authored by executive of a renewable marketer has called for, among other things, increasing the amount of California customers able to participate in direct access.

Much of the op-ed by co-author Gregory Staple, who is the founder of Renewable Power Direct which brokers green power for several retail suppliers among other services, deals with the bill (AB2145) to eliminate opt-out community choice aggregation in favor of opt-in aggregation.

EnergyChoiceMatters.com recently noted that the bill has passed the California Assembly (lower house).

However, aside from opposing the bill, the op-ed also calls for the expansion of direct access.

"It's time to revisit the arbitrary cap on direct access, and specifically for green power. Let more business customers opt in to suppliers of renewable energy. Competition could be phased in and capped at a reasonable level, such as an additional 15 percent of utilities' load," the op-ed recommends.
