Workman: Austin’s Solar Power Buys Are Political & Increase Rates for Austin Energy Customers

February 01,2016

Texas State Rep. Paul Workman has published another op-ed, this one published on TexasInsider.org, lamenting Austin Energy's high rates, driven by its various generation investments, and noting that the utility's decisions have, "unnecessarily increas[ed] rates for Austin Energy customers both inside and outside the city limits when power could be purchased for as little as 2.5 cents per kWh."

Workman again noted that Austin Energy customers are captive to the monopoly utility, unlike in other areas of the state, and called recent decisions from the Austin City Council concerning the utility inconsistent with commitments made to the legislature when fending off bills last session which would have introduced a modicum of customer choice at the utility
