Pennsylvania Utility To Offer Smart Thermostat and Behavioral Demand Response Program
December 01,2015
PECO has applied at the Pa. PUC to offer residential customers two demand response programs, as part of its obligations under various Act 129 conservation requirements
While PECO currently operated a residential direct load control A/C cycling program (an "old school" utility standard), PECO's new programs bring PECO further into the area of retail smart energy and innovation, and customer interaction, by relying on smart thermostats and other devices
Specifically, PECO proposes under its latest Act 129 plan the following residential DR plans:
• Smart Thermostat Solution, which provides a bill credit in exchange for allowing PECO to utilize Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats in customers’ homes to reduce central air conditions usage by increasing the set temperature during DR events.
• Behavioral DR, will alert participating customers with an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meter the day before a DR event, suggest load curtailment actions, and provide a bill credit to customers who reduce demand during the event
• DLC Solution, which provides a bill credit in exchange for allowing PECO to remotely cycle or shut down a customer’s central air conditioning unit on short notice during DR events.
“We are transforming the future of energy for our customers, and these innovative programs are part of that effort,” said Liz Murphy, PECO vice president of Governmental and External Affairs. “Our highly successful programs coupled with these new technology-driven programs will be the perfect combination to drive energy efficiency for our customers.”
