DMN: Texas REP Billing Error Led to 30% Rate Increase, Nearly 1,000 Affected

Dave Lieber's Watchdog column in The Dallas Morning News has the story of a customer of StarTex Power that saw their rate increase from 9.3¢ to 11.3¢ despite being on a long-term contract.
According to Lieber's report, "StarTex Power spokeswoman Kelly Biemer confirms the details of Sawyer's story. About 900 customers are affected. The problem was caused by a 'computer system error.'"
Such a significant billing error takes on new importance given that several large retail suppliers, such as NRG Energy, are arguing that supplier licensing standards, such as those in Connecticut, are not strict enough, and that various problems in the market would go away so long as the state got rid of suppliers operating out of their "basement"
