Exelon Generation to Develop Peaker in Massachusetts

February 06,2015

Exelon Generation announced that it will add 195 megawatts (MW) of fast-starting electric generation capacity in Massachusetts, with two new generation units built as an expansion to Exelon's existing generating facility in Medway, MA.

The units will operate primarily during times of peak energy demand. Both units will run mainly on natural gas, but will have the ability to run on ultra-low-sulfur distillate fuel oil as a back-up.

Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and be completed by mid-year 2018.

Exelon Generation currently owns and operates approximately 2,200 MW of both combined cycle and peaking generation in the Boston area, including the existing three-unit oil-fired 117 MW peaking facility in Medway, where the expansion will be built.
