Group Of Pa. Lawmakers Say PJM Capacity Market Opt-Out "May Be" Solution To Keep Nuclear Plants Open

November 30,2018

A group of Pennsylvania lawmakers, who have formed the Nuclear Energy Caucus, released a report warning of nuclear power plant shutdowns and offering a review of potential policy options to retain such plants

While no specific policy actions were recommended (though a review of other states' support for nuclear plants were cited), the report said that FERC's recent order allowing states to opt-out of the capacity market for a certain amount of load "may be" the solution

"The actions needed to retain nuclear plants can be taken in tandem with the Commonwealth’s response, needed in any case, to the FERC order. The FRR Alternative provided to the states by the FERC, may be just the solution that we need to tailor Pennsylvania’s energy future to Pennsylvanians’ values and priorities, including the important role of nuclear energy in that future," the report said
