Police Warn Of "Scam" In Which "Alternative Supplier" Sought Customer's Account Number
August 22,2018
In what was labeled a "scam alert", North Royalton, OH, police have warned residents of a telemarketer which left a voice message with a resident regarding supply charges on the customer's electric bill
Suspicious, the customer called "First Energy", their utility.
North Royalton posted the following on their Facebook page concerning the matter. The description is apparently relayed from the customer's account, but there are no direct quotations in the police's original alert. From the police's post:
The resident decided to call First Energy. They spoke with a customer representative who told them that First Energy never called and this was an alternate supplier who was looking to get the 20 digit customer number. She said that the customer number was the same thing as their electronic signature. Once they would obtain this, the electric supplier would have been changed. The First Energy rep told the resident that they will NEVER personally call their customers directly. If they do, it would be an automated message. First Energy would either mail a letter, or place a message in the section of your online bill.
