Press Report Attributes To Utility A Paraphrase Disparaging A Supplier’s Offer, Line Later Pulled

October 27,2014

A story by 97.9 XFM regarding Liberty Power's door-to-door marketing in the Ameren service area originally included a passage disparaging Liberty's offer which was attributed to Ameren.

Specifically, 97.9 XFM's original story, which cites concerns from some locals about Liberty's door-to-door campaign, included the following line concerning Liberty's Ameren marketing, which focused on a renewable offer:

"We reached out to Ameren, who told us that while Liberty Power is an approved Alternative Energy Provider, their claims of 'green, clean energy' are nothing more that [sic] sales tactics, and not true."

After RetailEnergyX.com began asking about the passage, it was removed from 97.9 XFM's story, though no explanation or correction is listed in the updated story.

Tucker Kennedy, Director of Communications for Ameren Illinois, provided the following statement to RetailEnergyX.com:

"The story does not reflect Ameren Illinois's position on green, clean energy. We encourage our customers to explore all of their options for electricity supply, including from renewable energy sources."

However, Ameren declined to confirm further specifics of how the original passage was included in the 97.9 XFM story. In discussions with persons familiar with the matter, RetailEnergyX.com understands that 97.9 XFM may have spoken with an Ameren employee who was not authorized to speak on behalf of Ameren, but as noted above, Ameren declined to confirm this to us.

Liberty Power provided RetailEnergyX.com with the following statement in response to the original story:

"Liberty Power was surprised and disappointed by the allegation from a competitor that our ‘green, clean energy’ products are not legitimate. Liberty Power sells two different green products in Illinois. One is the Green-e certified Renewable Energy Credits and the other is the Liberty Green 100% wind Renewable Energy Credits. These products are among our most popular with residential customers in the state. These renewable-energy products are listed in the U.S. Environment Protection Agency’s ‘Green Power Partnership.’ Liberty Power’s green-energy products support the further development of renewable energy resources nationwide."
