NRG REPs "Absolutely Intend" To Provide Customers With Utility Rate Relief Benefits From Tax Cuts

February 21,2018

NRG Energy, on behalf of its various retail electric providers, filed a letter with the Texas PUC stating that NRG's retail suppliers, "absolutely intend to provide customers the utility rate relief benefits associated with the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017."

As first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com, Texas State Senator Kelly Hancock had written to the Public Utility Commission of Texas that the failure of retail electric providers to make a "public commitment" to flow through to customers the savings on distribution fees charged to REPs from federal tax cuts, "would result in legislative action to clarify the regulatory scope of the Commission during the upcoming 86th Regular Session."

In a February 20 letter to the PUC, NRG noted that under its billing practices the "vast majority" of its customers will automatically receive the utility tax savings benefits once the appropriate utility rate schedules have been revised to accommodate the change in the Federal Income Tax rate and relief benefits are sent to the REP for billing customers.

"A small portion of our customers have contracted for custom or bundled products. In those instances, NRG will work with customers to find an efficient solution to provide the utility tax savings benefits," NRG said

NRG specifically stated in its letter:

"NRG appreciates the opportunity to work with the Commission to make it clear that the NRG Retail Electric Providers absolutely intend to provide customers the utility rate relief benefits associated with the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017.

"Based on NRG's billing practices, the vast majority of customers served by NRG Retail Electric Providers will automatically receive the utility tax savings benefits once the appropriate utility rate schedules have been revised to accommodate the change in the Federal Income Tax rate and relief benefits are sent to us for billing customers. A small portion of our customers have contracted for custom or bundled products. In those instances, NRG will work with customers to find an efficient solution to provide the utility tax savings benefits.

"NRG and its Retail Electric Providers are committed to the success of the Texas competitive market and delivering the benefits of competition to consumers across the state, especially the more than 2 million homes and businesses across Texas that the NRG electric providers serve. We appreciate the opportunity to provide clarity on this matter and look forward to providing our customers with utility rate relief benefits."
