Spark Energy In New Partnership To Help Customers In Debt

Jul 29, 2014

Spark Energy, the Selkirk-based utilities company has formed a partnership with independent debt management organisation, Payplan, to assist customers who are having difficulty managing their finances.

PayPlan, one of the largest free debt advice providers in the UK, offers free and impartial service to people struggling with debt, helping to solve their money related problems.

Spark will offer this additional service via its website and 115 strong call centre staff, who are being trained to identify customers which may be in need of financial support or advice. Payplan will then get in touch with the customer, help them assess their situation and work out a debt management solution.

The organisation has over 20 years’ experience of supporting customers in financial difficulty, working in partnership with creditors, corporates and voluntary organisations which all refer individuals to them.

They have helped over one-million people with their debt problems, speaking to 2,000 new customers every week.

Paul Martin, Head of Customer Services at Spark Energy, said: “This is a really important area for us and we’re proud to have formed a partnership with Payplan, helping customers who are having difficulties managing their finances to find a solution to their problems.

“They are independent and possess a large amount of experience in helping individuals tackle debt related matters, so we are confident they will be able to help our customers who have lost track of their finances.

“We offer some of the cheapest tariffs in the UK energy market, a range of payment methods and always encourage customers to provide up-to-date meter readings but despite these precautions, debt is still an unfortunate reality for many adults. We hope this partnership can go some way towards addressing the issue.”

Speaking about the partnership with Spark Energy, Graeme Penton, Partnerships Manager at Payplan, said: “Even though there are signs the economy is starting to recover, many consumers are still struggling to make payments on essentials such as Gas and Electricity, it is crucial that people know help is available and that they are encouraged to seek free independent debt advice as soon as possible.

“In the last 20 years Payplan has delivered free and independent debt advice to over 1million people in the UK helping them get back in control of their finances and enabling them to live again without the fear of debt.

“We are proud to form this new partnership with Spark Energy - an organisation that genuinely cares about doing the right thing for their customers and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure their customers get the help they need when they need it.”

The partnership was also warmly welcomed by Energy UK, the trade association for the energy industry.

Angela Knight, chief executive of Energy UK said:

“Energy suppliers know that customers can struggle to pay their bills and may be concerned about budgeting for the costs of their domestic expenses. But no one needs to sit at home and worry about putting on the heating – help is available. Today’s announcement from Spark Energy is another great example of how the industry is trying to help when customers need support most.”
