Google Foresees Advertising, "Other Content" on Thermostats

Google, which now owns the maker of the Nest learning thermostat used by several retail energy providers, has informed federal regulators that it foresees placing advertisements on smart thermostats, among other in-home devices
In a December 2013 letter to the SEC, recently made public, Google said, "For example, a few years from now, we and other companies could be serving ads and other content on refrigerators, car dashboards, thermostats, glasses, and watches, to name just a few possibilities."
Google scrambled to assuage potential backlash, telling the Wall Street Journal that the SEC letter was written prior to its acquisition of Nest, and "which does not reflect Google's product roadmap," since such acquisition.
"Nest, which we acquired after this filing was made, does not have an ads-based model and has never had any such plans," Google told the WSJ
Tony Fadell, Nest's founder and CEO, also issued the following statement to the Journal and other media outlets:
"Nest is being run independently from the rest of Google, with a separate management team, brand and culture. For example, Nest has a paid-for business model, while Google has generally had an ads-supported business model. We have nothing against ads – after all Nest does lots of advertising. We just don't think ads are right for the Nest user experience."
