Alberta Bans Door-to-Door Marketing of Energy, Related Services

November 29,2016

The Alberta provincial government announced that selling household energy products unsolicited door-to-door will be prohibited after January 1, 2017.

This prohibition is for unsolicited sales of household energy products only, the government said. These include:

• natural gas and electricity energy contracts

• energy audits

• water heaters

• furnaces

• windows

• air conditioners

"Energy companies still have multiple ways to sell directly to Albertans, including telephone and online sales, kiosks and advertising. Consumers can still invite salespeople to their homes," the provincial government said

The door-to-door prohibition follows the capping of the Alberta default service rates (click here) at 6.8 cents per kWh (Canadian $) and adoption of a capacity market
