Alberta Officially Moves To Adopt Capacity Market

November 28,2016

Fresh off capping retail default service rates (click for story) at 6.8 cents per kWh (Canadian $), the Alberta provincial government has announced that it will implement a capacity market.

The capacity market, to be in place by 2021, is allegedly needed due to alleged capacity shortages, which do no result from operation of the energy-only market, but through non-market government intervention to shutter coal-fired generation

The provincial government did not announce specific design elements of the capacity market yet, though a recommendation from the Alberta Electric System Operator suggests a three-year forward procurement
