City Official To Residents: Don’t Shop For Power Until We Tell You What To Do
November 21,2016
The paternalism of opt-out municipal aggregations was on full display at a recent Brook Park, Ohio city council meeting, where the mayor told residents not to shop for power until the city tells them what to do.
The city is part of the NOPEC aggregation which, as previously reported, is moving from FirstEnergy Solutions to NextEra Energy for supply
"I'm going to ask citizens not to agree to any marketer that is calling you, not to agree to anything anybody is sending you in the mail, until you hear from us officially as a city as to how you should proceed," Mayor Tom Coyne told residents, according to cleveland.com
"[I]f you're part of the aggregation group, please ... do not contract with anybody. Please," the mayor pleaded
However, cleveland.com reports Coyne was also unhappy with the NOPEC process in the wake of the FirstEnergy Solutions termination of the NOPEC contract, and said he has been entertaining offers from other suppliers to compare to NOPEC.
Of NOPEC, Coyne said, per cleveland.com, "It seems they're more interested in perpetrating their existence than they are at reducing the cost to the customers."
