SHOCK: Broker Agent’s Electricity Rate "Bait And Switch" Leads to Prison Sentence

May 14,2014

The Allentown Morning Call reports that an individual has been sentenced to a prison term for his connection in a scheme to sign up customers for all-inclusive fixed contracts but in actuality placing such customers on energy-only contracts (with pass-throughs for capacity, transmission, etc.).

The Morning Call reported that a U.S. District Judge ordered a 30-day prison sentence, "followed by six months of home confinement and three years of supervised release," for an individual who pled to his involvement in the scheme.

According to the Morning Call, the individual, "pleaded guilty in January to aiding and abetting wire fraud, a charge that carried a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison," as a result of the brokering activity.

A complaint filed by federal prosecutors alleged that the recently sentenced individual, and others who held themselves out as owners and employees of the broker, used photoshop to alter Power of Attorney documents signed by customers, and earned commissions from suppliers for which they were not entitled.

See the Morning Call for more, including the identity of the individuals and broker.
