Identity Theft Leads To Virginia Resident Being Sent Billing Emails By Texas Retail Provider

October 20,2016

A suspected case of identity theft led to Reliant sending emails to a Virginia woman concerning Texas bills, terms of service, and other account information who was not a customer of the company.

The Virginia woman's email address was used to create a number of fictitious accounts, for service at other locations.

"An unscrupulous individual created a number of fictitious accounts to avoid paying for electricity service," Reliant said in a statement provided to several media outlets.

Reliant said that it has not experienced a security breach

Reliant has referred the matter to authorities, including the FBI, and has recorded the IP address used to create the fictitious account.
