New Jersey Senate Passes Retail Energy Customer Protection Bills
October 26,2015
The New Jersey Senate has passed two bills related to retail energy consumer protection
The Senate passed A3851 which requires the BPU to develop a contract summary page and contract standards which, among other things, shall notify customers of the, "difference between a fixed rate and a variable rate that is easily understandable by the general public, including an explanation on how weather fluctuations may affect the price of variable rate contracts."
Unlike an earlier version of a companion bill, the version of A3851 passed by the Senate retains a supplier's ability to contract via electronic signatures, independent TPVs, and audio recordings of customer-initiated calls.
The Senate also passed A3849, which would require the BPU to provide on its website pricing information for electric generation services provided by an electric power supplier and gas supply service provided by a gas supplier
Both bills have already been passed by the Assembly
