The agent of a third-party contractor allegedly marketing on behalf of IDT Energy was pepper-sprayed by police after becoming "belligerent" when police confronted the agent about whether the agent had a permit to conduct door-to-door sales, the Cliffview Pilot and NorthJersey.com both report
The salesperson was allegedly marketing supply from IDT Energy for a third-party contractor. The agent was not an IDT Energy employee.
IDT Energy provided the following statement to RetailEnergyX.com:
"We are aware of and alarmed by the incident in Little Ferry, NJ, as reported on NorthJersey.com and Cliffviewpilot.com. IDT Energy maintains and enforces a zero tolerance policy regarding violations of local, state and federal law or regulation on the part of employees or contractors representing the company," said Alan Schwab, chief operating officer of IDT Energy, Inc.
"The person identified in the NorthJersey.com and cliffviewpilot.com stories is not an employee of IDT Energy. Rather, she worked for a contractor retained by IDT Energy to sell the company’s services to consumers. Canvassing without the appropriate permits is itself a violation of the strict zero tolerance policy we have in place with all of our third-party vendors and service providers. This person was immediately terminated from service and will be restricted from representing any of our offerings in the future," added Schwab.
"IDT Energy is dedicated to conducting business in accordance with the highest ethical standards and in a manner that is consistent with all applicable laws. Clearly, the behavior described is unacceptable," said Schwab.
