Texas Senator Says Time To Review Whether Munis, Co-ops Should Be Required To Offer Electric Choice

February 12,2020

Texas State Senator Charles Schwertner has said it is time to review whether electric choice should be required at municipal owned utilities and cooperatives in Texas, WTAW reported

Schwertner said that he would be examining the pros and cons of such an expansion of electric choice before next session

Schwertner cited above-market costs of electricity at Georgetown's municipal utility, which had previously heralded its renewable procurements (story here)

Schwertner also cited the experience at Austin Energy and efforts to bring choice to all customers, or a subset of customers (large C&Is), at Austin Energy in recent legislative sessions
