Google Enters Agreement With NV Energy For Solar, Battery Storage

January 08,2020

NV Energy and Google have filed an application at the Nevada PUC for Google to take service from the utility under a newly proposed Large Customer Market Price Energy tariff ("LCMPE Tariff').

Under the agreement, the Google Henderson Data Center would be served by 350 MW of solar with 250 to 280 MW of battery storage from NV Energy. NV Energy has identified various sources to meet these needs, and these resources include both company-owned renewable facilities and purchased power agreements

The agreement between the utility and the Google Henderson Data Center, "provides a vehicle to allow Google's Henderson data center facility to receive bundled electric service, reflecting the market price of energy, using energy resources that will not automatically subject Google's Henderson data center facility to an impact fee in the event the Google subsequently exercises its rights under NRS Chapter 704B [exit from utility supply]."

"The Google Henderson Data Center ESA contemplates both a short-term energy supply period and a long-term energy supply period. The short-term energy supply period encompasses the time from when Google's data center declares commercial operation and begins taking electric service until such time as the renewable facilities reach the commercial operation date ('COD'). To provide service to Google's data center, the Company will procure and sell wholesale market energy, to be priced at an appropriate index pricing, or in the alternative, energy from excess capacity available from the Company's generation fleet. It is anticipated that the Company may make certain block purchases on behalf of Google for monthly, or annual term lengths, and make smaller hourly or daily procurements to balance variations in load from hour-to-hour and day-to-day. Google anticipates its southern facilities to be commercially operational in the first or second quarter of 2020," the utility said

The long-term energy supply period, reflecting service from the solar and storage, provides for a fixed rate for energy and capacity.
