Florida Electric Choice Opponents Ask Secretary Of State To Revoke Petition Signatures
January 06,2020
Floridians For Truth has written a letter to the Florida Secretary of State asking that the Secretary invalidate signatures submitted in favor of the electric choice ballot initiative, on the basis of what Floridians For Truth alleged is "fraud", Florida Politics reports
As previously reported, Floridians for Truth had sent mailers to signatories of the electric choice petition alleging that such customers were "fooled" into signing the petition, and asking that recipients rescind their signature. Floridians for Truth says that it has obtained requests from thousands of voters for their signatures to be rescinded.
A 2010 ruling from the state's Supreme Court found that voters cannot rescind their signature submitted in support of a ballot petition. However, according to Florida Politics, Floridians For Truth said that it will file a lawsuit if its request for the Secretary of State to invalidate the signatures is denied
Floridians For Truth's allegations of "fraud" are premised on two arguments, previously made by opponents of the ballot initiative in various forums
First, the ballot initiative says that it will allow customers to choose their electricity supplier, but will actually outlaw the ability of the customer to choose to receive supply from their distribution utility
Second, Floridians For Truth alleges that campaign materials touting electric choice as bringing savings and more renewable energy are, "easily proven as being false and misleading."
As first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com, the Florida electric choice ballot initiative has surpassed 600,000 currently valid signatures (currently standing at over 624,000)
A total of 766,200 is needed to qualify for the ballot. The deadline for signatures to be certified by the Florida secretary of state is February 1, 2020
