Update: "Democratic Socialists" Aldermen Continue Push For Chicago Municipal Takeover Of ComEd

January 06,2020

With Commonwealth Edison's franchise agreement with the City of Chicago expiring at the end of 2020, a contingent of "democratic socialist" aldermen on Chicago's City Council continue to push for a municipal takeover of the utility, rather than extending the franchise agreement, Chicago magazine reports

Alderman Daniel La Spata, one of the councilors seeking municipalization, said that, among other things, the city could implement a progressive rate structure, in which low-income or low-volume consumers are charged less per kWh, under city ownership, Chicago magazine reports
