Co-op Says Its Customers On Competitive Retail Supply Set To Pay $2.5 Million More Than SOS
December 09,2019
In an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun, Joe Slater, CEO of the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, says that the cop-op's 4,500 customers on competitive retail supply, "are on track to pay $2.5 million more," than SMECO’s supply rate in 2019
Slater writes, "the reality is that alternative suppliers have abused [their] authority and have resorted to gimmicks and pricing schemes in order to make a buck and sell their product."
Slater says many retail plans, "are sold by individuals who go door-to-door or call 'on behalf of SMECO.' This is wrong. It’s deceitful, and it’s costing Marylanders millions of dollars per year."
Slater sought reform of the retail market by the General Assembly, and wrote that a "good start" would be, "eliminating retail choice for those ratepayers who receive government assistance to help pay their bills."
