Centrica has joined the Smart Mobility Living Lab: London as the latest member of its Shared Research Programme, established to help organisations to explore the evolving technologies and business models that will underpin the future of mobility.

Located at the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) aims to build the UK’s most advanced test environment for developing future transport technologies, services and business models.

The three-year programme brings together companies with a shared interest in the development of connected and autonomous vehicles, including founding members Aviva, BP, Hastings Direct and Honda R&D Europe.

Centrica has also announced the appointment of a new lead to head up its new Mobility Ventures team. Carl Bayliss joins from Nissan GB where he was responsible for the Electric Vehicle (EV) & Energy product portfolio, leading EV infrastructure development including vehicle-to-grid projects with both fleet & residential products.

Bayliss will work with Centrica’s international Consumer and Business units to develop customer offers that combine energy supply and EV charging infrastructure services alongside value-add services such as energy optimisation and software applications. He will also lead a new Home Energy Management team that aims to drive down domestic electricity bills through the development of new propositions that will also support the flexibility of the grid.

Charles Cameron, Centrica’s Director of Technology & Engineering and Chairman of Centrica Innovations, said: “Carl brings with him a unique skill-set of operational and strategic experience that has been built up over 20 years in the global automotive market. With over half of this experience gained outside of the UK, I have no doubt that he’ll be a great asset as we continue to progress new solutions and partnerships that will transform our offer to homes and businesses internationally.”
